Man Utd 'target ex-Chelsea star' in January transfer as player's preference comes to light

Manchester United are weighing up a January move for ex-Chelsea forward Timo Werner in a bid to solve their attacking issues, according to reports. The Red Devils have only scored 16 league goals in 13 matches in the Premier League this season, making them the least prolific team in the division’s top half by some distance.

Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Antony have scored just twice between them so far this season, leaving United lagging behind their Premier League rivals in front of goal. It seems as though Erik ten Hag is prioritising the addition of a new striker in January as he looks to fix the problem, with former Chelsea ace Werner said to be among the Dutchman’s targets.

United have already enquired to RB Leipzig about Werner’s availability in advance of the January window, according to Sky Germany. The report states that the Red Devils are yet to make a formal offer but are seriously considering a move for the 27-year-old’s signature at the turn of the year.

Leipzig are reportedly willing to sanction Werner’s exit if he wishes to leave the club, with the striker having fallen out of favour in recent weeks. However, it is said that his current preference would be to stay at Leipzig until the summer despite being unhappy with his playing situation.

It remains to be seen if Werner will end up changing his mind between now and January, with his place in the Germany side under threat ahead of next summer’s Euros. He was not called up by Julian Nagelsmann for the recent international matches against Turkey and Austria and is now facing a tricky battle to regain his spot in the squad.

Werner has also been linked with a potential move to Fulham, who have struggled for goals this season after selling Aleksandar Mitrovic to Al-Hilal over the summer. West Ham are said to be another side with a keen eye on Werner but only time will tell where he will be playing his club football at the end of the January window.
