Man Utd may have to tweak Mason Greenwood agreement after 'attractive offer'

Getafe are already looking to extend Mason Greenwood’s stay at the club after he joined the Spanish side on loan at the start of this season, per reports. But with a further loan deal understood to be likelier than a permanent transfer, Manchester United may need to seek greater financial compensation in return for lending out his services.

Greenwood was shipped off to Getafe in the summer after the Red Devils opted to cut ties with the 22-year-old following a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. A criminal case had been brought against the player with allegations of attempted rape and assault but proceedings were discontinued in February.

Greenwood remains a United player until June 2025, however, Getafe are hoping to keep him at Estadio Coliseum, according to The Sun. A source told the British tabloid: “Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill.

“The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life. They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so — and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone.”

If United are to accept a second season on loan then it would be in their best interests to agree upon a loan fee with Getafe to help them recoup some funds. Getafe are currently only paying a “small contribution” of his £75,000 a week wages with United covering the majority.

Meanwhile, the La Liga outfit did not pay a loan fee as part of their existing agreement. In total, Greenwood will be paid a further £6million by Man Utd if he remains at the club until his contract expires in 18 months’ time.

The English forward has faced a mixed reaction since joining Getafe. He has scored three goals in 10 appearances for the club across all competitions since completing his loan move in September.

He had gone more than 18 months without playing by the time he made his Getafe debut during a 3–2 La Liga win over Osasuna on September 17 while his inaugural goal for the club, which came during a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo in October, was his first since January 2022.
