Man Utd may confirm Mason Greenwood decision in January as Erik ten Hag eyes goals

Manchester United could confirm Mason Greenwood’s future at the club in the January transfer window if Erik ten Hag gets his way. United are reportedly actively working on striker targets next month to solve Ten Hag’s attacking woes this season, which spells bad news for Greenwood.

It’s December, and Rasmus Hojlund is the only Red Devils forward who has scored more than three goals in all competitions.

And Hojlund himself has struggled, with all five of his goals coming in the Champions League, contributing to just 18 goals as a team in 16 Premier League games.

United reportedly planned to reintegrate Greenwood into Ten Hag’s squad before internal and external backlash forced a U-turn.

The 22-year-old joined Getafe on a season-long loan, and the word from United suggested they didn’t expect him to play for the club again.

But Ten Hag’s desperate need for more attacking quality has sparked speculation over Greenwood’s future, especially with the impending changes in the sporting hierarchy.

Greenwood is out of contract in 2025, leaving United two more transfer windows to cash in on him if they decide against allowing him to resume his Old Trafford career.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United plan to bide their time with a final decision on their former No 11 until the season’s final few months.

Jadon Sancho’s likely January exit has also seen questions about Greenwood flare up, considering it leaves Ten Hag even shorter of experienced options.

But United are said to be weighing up their options from elsewhere to solve the Dutchman’s goalscoring frustrations.

Romano claims that the Red Devils will likely be active this winter and have held talks about potential striker targets.

The M16 giants have been linked with a handful of attacking names, including Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.

Ten Hag wants to add competition for Hojlund, who has been burdened with severe pressure to score goals at just 20 in his first season in England.

But Sancho’s expected departure would also aim attention towards the right wing, where inexperienced duo Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri join Antony.

Given Greenwood operates in both positions, United targeting a new signing in either next month may confirm that the door on his return is closed for good.

He has registered four goals and three assists in 13 games for Getafe so far this term, and a part of him will be fighting for his future at his boyhood club.

However, attacking transfer activity at Old Trafford could mean Greenwood will be playing for an attractive move next summer instead.
