Manchester United are reportedly unhappy with Fulham’s social media post which appeared to poke fun at an injury sustained by Bruno Fernandes over the weekend. Erik ten Hag has also addressed the clip, which was posted on Tik Tok, branding the captioned clip as ‘pathetic’.
United were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford, with Alex Iwobi scoring a 97th-minute winner to send the away supporters into a frenzy. Marco Silva’s side looked like they would be forced to settle for a point after Harry Maguire equalised following Calvin Bassey’s opener, but a swift counter-attack by the Cottagers piled more pressure on Ten Hag.
Fulham heaped the praise on their side following the victory, though they also spared a thought for Fernandes among their celebrations. The Craven Cottage outfit shared a clip online that showed the United skipper appear to ‘feign an injury’.
The Portuguese international took a shot at goal from outside of the box before dropping to the ground after a minor collision with Sasa Lukic. Fernandes clutched his ankle but was not awarded a free kick by referee Michael Oliver, prompting the playmaker to quickly return to his feet and continue playing.
Fulham posted the video with comical music and the sarcastic caption: “So glad he’s okay,” along with a rolling eyes emoji to suggest that they aren’t convinced by the theatrics. But United have been left furious by the nature of the post, with Ten Hag even jumping to the defence of his midfielder. According to The Mirror, the Red Devils have hit back at the suggestion that Fernandes ‘feigned’ the injury and are not impressed by Fulham’s decision to ‘inflame the situation’.
The ex-Sporting star already has a reputation among Premier League fans for going down easily, and the post by Fulham has only fuelled that narrative further in the eyes of United. The Old Trafford outfit have not lodged an official complaint against the 12th-placed side but club bosses are angry with the situation and the way that the media has painted Fernandes as a character who fakes injuries and looks to ‘con officials’.
