Man Utd have 'four-man transfer shortlist’ as Erik ten Hag to sign new Cristiano Ronaldo

Hojlund has made seven Premier League appearances since his £72million switch from Atalanta in the summer.

However, he is yet to score in the competition, with all three of his United goals coming in Champions League defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

In fact, Ten Hag’s attacking department has been consistently toothless. Marcus Rashford is United’s only forward with a goal contribution in the league this term – registering a goal and an assist.

And the Dutchman is expected to act this winter if he remains in charge after a disastrous start to his second season at the helm.

After short-term moves for the likes of Wout Weghorst, Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Odion Ighalo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Radamel Falcao, the next veteran striker could be on his way to M16 very soon.

According to TEAMtalk, United won’t challenge Arsenal and Chelsea for Brentford striker Ivan Toney in January, with Brentford only considering bids in the region of £80m.

But four strikers – including three experienced options – are on United’s radar to off Hojlund competition and support his progress in English football.

FC Porto’s Mehdi Taremi is said to be a long-term target at Old Trafford, and his contract is due to expire next summer. But United may be rivalled by Saudi Arabia’s riches for the 31-year-old.

The report names AS Monaco frontman Wissam Ben-Yedder, 33, another experienced option Ten Hag has identified.

United are also said to be keeping tabs on 27-year-old Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa, who has long been linked with a return to Europe, and the Premier League, especially.

Like Taremi, the ex-Inter Milan star also has interest from Saudi Arabia, but a move to Old Trafford would surely appeal.

The fourth name on United’s reported shortlist, 20-year-old Marcos Leonardo, is somewhat of a wildcard, given a preference for a more seasoned player.

But United scouts have regularly watched the Santos striker in action, and he is expected to move to Europe in the near future.

Leonardo is said to be valued at £20m and is also the subject of interest from Newcastle United.

He is likely the outsider alongside United’s other three options, though, with funds expected to be limited midway through the season, barring any sales.
