Man stabbed in neck by cousin over vodka row 'died twice' on way to hospital but survived

A man who had been stabbed in the neck following an argument over vodka ‘died twice’ on his way to hospital – but managed to survive.

Jamie Bryson, 27, was stabbed with a long blade by his cousin after a family row over a bottle of vodka at a relative’s house in Airdrie, Scotland.

His assailant Declan Keyes, 18, had been confronted by Jamie about bringing booze to the gathering, due to the health issues of one of their other relatives.

But in response Declan took the blade from his pocket and plunged it into Jamie’s neck, severing his subclavian artery.

Jamie ran outside, calling for his mum, before neighbours helped him and called 999.

In court Keyes admitted to attempted murder and imprisoned for five years before being let out on licence after two years.

But Jamie still suffers terrifying flashbacks from his near death experience.

He died twice on the way to hospital, reports the Daily Record.

Recalling the attack, Jamie said: “I was standing over Declan, shouting at him to take the vodka out the house. He knew he wasn’t allowed to bring spirits in.

“But he was just sitting staring through me like I wasn’t there. His hands were in his pockets. I went to stand back and he just stabbed me. At first I thought I’d been punched in the neck but then I saw a wee flash of silver.”

He said that he initially thought Declan had got out a screwdriver, adding: “After he stabbed me, he bounced back away from me as I put my hands around my neck.

“I could just feel all this heat from the blood. When I took my hands away, it just started spraying all over the room. I ran out the door behind Declan.”

Jamie said the “only reason” he survived was from the help of his neighbours after they rushed out to help him.

He said: “I was really scared. Honestly, I just wanted to see my mum. That’s all I could think about and kept shouting for her.”

He was raced to intensive care, he said, and given two blood transfusions in the ambulance, adding: “I woke up in intensive care and I had a stent put into my heart through my right arm.

“I should have been in there longer but I signed myself out because I just wanted to go home to my family.”

He still suffers from the trauma of the horrific event, however, and keeps thinking he can see Declan in the street.

“I don’t even want to think about it anymore,” he said.

“I just want to move away from the area. But I spend all my time with my two sisters and my parents now.

“They’ve been helping me and are a safe haven for me. I’m just really glad that I’m still alive.”

Keyes had taken the blade he used to stab Jamie from another relative’s house without their knowledge, Glasgow High Court heard.

When officers questioned him, he explained that Jamie had been “annoying” him.
