Man dies after shocking video shows 'wife setting him on fire' in the middle of a store

A man tragically died after his wife allegedly set him on fire in a fit of jealousy at their fish market in Brazil.

Andre Chapeta, 50, passed away less than a week after suffering severe burn injuries.

The shocking incident occurred at their store in Rio de Janeiro when Ana Maria Paixao reportedly saw Chapeta sitting at a table.

CCTV footage appears to show Paixao walking past the counter before opening a bottle, pouring a flammable liquid over him and setting him alight.

Chapeta ran into the stock room of the fish market, engulfed in flames.

He was rushed to Getulio Vargas Hospital, where he received treatment for burns covering 92 percent of his body, but succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

Paixao was arrested by police on Thursday morning but was released overnight after a judge failed to sign off an arrest warrant.

Civil Police Chief Flavio Ferreira believes the incident was driven by Paixao’s jealousy over her husband.

He told channel R7 that the couple’s 30-year relationship was allegedly marked by episodes of domestic violence.

Paixao told investigators that she had been beaten prior to setting Chapeta on fire and claimed she acted in self-defence, an allegation which they dismissed.

Ferreira stated: “What she says is not what the image shows. The image shows the victim sitting in a chair. She arrives, coldly, throws the liquid and sets him on fire.

“She was not at that moment in a vulnerable situation, she was not in a situation in which she would be imminently attacked.

“On the contrary, as I said, he was sitting and posed no risk to her physical integrity at that moment.”
