Man arrested after huge 100ft fire rips through industrial estate


A 25-year-old man has been arrested after a huge fire tore through an industrial estate.

Firefighters were called to the Bridgend Industrial Estate in south Wales shortly before 8.30pm on Friday, January 19. A building was evacuated an no injuries were reported.

Neighbours however said they heard “explosions” with “100ft flames” and smoke billowing into the skyline. A number of roads were closed while emergency services were at the scene.

And fire crews battled through the night in order to control the fire. The fire was brought under control almost 12 hours after crews first attended.

South Wales Police say efforts were underway to make sure neighbouring business could return once the area is secure. It comes as neighbours were told to keep their doors and windows closed.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “Police officers investigating the incident have made an arrest. A 25-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

“He has been taken to Queen’s Road police station where he is being questioned. Detectives are appealing for anyone with any information concerning this incident to come forward, quoting reference 2400022352.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it attended along with the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

A fire service spokesman said: “South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS), alongside South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), attended an incident at Bridgend Industrial Estate yesterday evening at approximately 20.30hrs.

“On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed fire at a substantial commercial unit. Multiple appliances and crews attended and Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire under control at approximately 08:00 hours this morning.

“SWFRS would like to thank the local community and our blue light partners for bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.”
