M40 Oxfordshire closed for 'police investigation' after crash


The M40 is set to remain closed throughout the morning following a crash.

The southbound stretch of the motorway is closed between junction 8A, near Waterstock, and junction 6, near Lewknor. The incident was first reported around 4.45am on Sunday, January 21.

National Highways says Thames Valley Police officers are on the scene. Two ambulances are also in attendance.

Traffic monitoring company INRIX reports the incident involves a car and a lorry. There are no early indication of injuries.

A National Highways spokesman said: “The M40 in Oxfordshire is closed southbound between J8A near Waterstock and J6 near Lewknor following a collision.

“Thames Valley Police and two ambulance teams have attended. It is anticipated that this closure will remain in place throughout this morning – for a full police led investigation.”

M40 Oxfordshire diversion route

Motorists are advised to follow the Hollow Triangle diversion symbol on road signs. The route is:

  • Exit the M40 at J8A and head onto the A40.
  • Continue on the A40 southbound to the junction with the B4009.
  • Re-join the M40 at J6.

National Highways is urging drivers to leave extra time. While INRIX says traffic is currently being taken off the motorway at junction 8A.
