M4 closed between Berkshire and Wiltshire due to 'serious' police incident

A major stretch of the M4 between Berkshire and Wiltshire has been closed throughout the night due to a “serious” “police-led incident”.

National Highways revealed the stretch between junction 15, Swindon, and junction 14, Hungerford. The carriageway is closed in both directions.

The highways agency said Thames Valley Police was running a “mutli-agency response” to the incident. Although it has not revealed the nature of the closure.

A National Highways spokesman said: “At approximately 21:46 last night we were advised of a serious incident resulting in the closure of the M4 in both directions between J15 and J14.

“Thames Valley Police are leading a multi agency response to the incident. National Highways resources are providing assistance with traffic management.

“Due to the serious nature of the incident the road is expected to remain closed through the morning to facilitate the ongoing police collision investigations.”

According to traffic monitoring website INRIX, motorists were turned around at the scene last night. It says the road is currently closed due to “accident investigation work”.
