M3 traffic chaos on Boxing Day as minibus crash closes lanes sparking four-mile queues

A minibus and several cars have been caught up in an accident on the northbound carriageway on the M3 motorway as Boxing Day traffic chaos strikes roads across the UK. The crash, first reported around 12:44, has caused two lanes to shut between Junction 3 (Lightwater) and Junction 2 (The M25).

A spokesperson from National Highways stated: “2 lanes (of 4) are closed on the M3 eastbound in Surrey between J3 (Lightwater) and J2 (M25) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency services are on scene.

“There’s a 30 minute delay on approach with 4 miles of congestion.”

It comes as several motorways across the country experience severe traffic jams. Thousands across the country have flocked to motorways as the rail strikes interrupt their travel plans.

The AA warned that it expects 15.2 million cars to hit UK roads today, with shoppers and football fans more likely to travel.

Pre-empting the travel problems, a spokesperson at the AA said: “Traffic is likely to build around shopping centres as lots of people seek a bargain in the sales, meanwhile football fans will travel to see their teams.

“There is scope for localised traffic congestion and more short trips, but traffic should be dispersed throughout the day as people take their time after Christmas Day.”
