A huge chunk of the M25 is set to close within hours sparking a weekend of travel chaos for motorists in and around London.
At 9pm tonight, the UK’s busiest motorway will shut at junctions 10 and 11, with the closures remaining in place for 57 hours throughout the weekend until 6am on Monday morning.
Widespread travel chaos is expected but motorists have been warned not to travel on the motorway unless it is absolutely necessary. The motorway usually carries between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles in each direction every hour, so long diversions are likely to spark long delays.
The closure, the likes of which has not been seen since the stretch of road opened in 1975, will allow crews to knock down the Clearmount Bridleway bridge and install a “very large” gantry in its place, according to National Highways.
