In previous seasons Liverpool have provided plenty of evidence that they are very much willing and able to dip into the January transfer window to make crucial additions to the squad.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has, on several occasions, spoke of the complexities and difficulty of getting mid-season deals over lines, particularly due to vastly inflated fees, yet the Reds have conducted business when needs must.
And now, with January rapidly approaching and a few holes showing in the current Liverpool XI, Klopp is looking increasingly likely to delve into his least favourite transfer period once again.
Last summer Liverpool astutely took the opportunity of rubber stamping a deal for Holland international Cody Gakpo, in order to ward off the advances of both Manchester United and Leeds and to shore up a future replacement for the then departing Roberto Firmino.
Just 12 months prior, in the January window, a very similar thought process was carried out with the rapid acquisition of winger Luis Diaz, in order to prevent Tottenham pulling off a coup following the Londoners’ £50m offer to Porto.
Now Klopp, who this week provoked the ire of rivals Chelsea by suggesting Liverpool got very ‘lucky’ in the summer window after missing out on duo Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia – both of which cost the Blues a combined £175m – and instead landing the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, who have each respectively set Anfield alight with their performances.
“The summer we had a few strange things happen in the transfer market but here, between us, I can say, ‘My god, were we lucky, eh?’”, said Klopp, as quote the Daily Mail.
