Met Office weather forecasters have warned Britons to expect a two-day deluge this weekend as rising temperatures prompt a stormy system to develop over the UK. The agency has issued a yellow warning covering dozens of areas over 16 hours from Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11, with flooding on the cards as several inches worth of rain batter Britons in England, Scotland and Wales. Among the possible effects of the coming storm are “lightning strikes”, the Met Office said. The average storm can cause up to 28 lightning strikes per minute over hours, often tens of thousands for the duration, and with the current warnings extended over two days, Express.co.uk is on hand to track the weather phenomena as they hit the ground.
The first Met Office storm warning commences this afternoon from 2pm, and lasts for the following seven hours until 9pm.
The second activates on Sunday, June 11, from 12pm for nine hours, again expiring by 9pm at night.
Frank Saunders, Met Office Chief Meteorologist, said Britons should expect “heavy thundery downpours” to washout their weekend.
He said: “Temperatures will increase into the weekend with a peak of 31C expected on Saturday in central and southeast England.
“As the heat builds from the south, thundery showers will develop through Saturday afternoon and while not everyone in the warning area will see the heaviest showers, or even any rain at all, some will bring heavy thundery downpours.
“With intense showers there is a risk of surface water flooding which could cause some disruption – the very dry, baked ground may not help in that respect.”
