The Liberal Democrats have called for Parliament to be recalled in order to pass emergency legislation allowing pubs to open from 10am on the morning of the Women’s World Cup final.
The highly anticipated sporting showdown will kick off at 11am this Sunday, however laws currently ban boozers from serving tipples until midday.
The Lib Dems have called on MPs to return to parliament to pass an emergency law freeing publicans up from the restrictions.
The party’s deputy leader, Daisy Cooper, said: “This is an open goal for the Government.
“The Lionesses have made history by reaching the final, it’s only right that people across the country can come together and show their full support on Sunday.
“MPs should get down to Westminster tomorrow and score a last-minute winner for our pubs and the Lionesses.”
The Lionesses made history on Wednesday, beating Australia 3-1 to reach the Women’s World Cup final for the first time.
They will go up against Spain this Sunday for the final showdown.
England’s Lucy Bronze said: “We all dreamed of being in the final.
“It is the one thing I have ever wanted – to reach the final of the World Cup… I can’t believe it.”
Following the win against the Aussies, Rishi Sunak tweeted: “What a performance @Lionesses. Just one more game to go… bring on Sunday”.
A Government spokesperson said: “We congratulate the Lionesses on their fantastic achievement in getting to the Women’s World Cup final”.
However they rejected calls for a bank holiday should the Lionesses win.
“The current pattern of public and bank holidays is well established and there are no plans to change this.”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has backed calls for a bank holiday, however, saying: “It’s almost 60 years since England won the World Cup.
“I’m never complacent about anything…but there should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home.”
