Lewis Hamilton 'on verge of joining Ferrari' and Mercedes exit could be confirmed in days

Lewis Hamilton is pursuing a sensational move to Ferrari, according to reports from Spanish and Italian media. The seven-time world champion signed a new deal with Mercedes last summer, but could be on the move for the 2025 season.

Hamilton was first linked to Ferrari during the 2023 campaign when reports emerged that the legendary Brit had made contact with president John Elkann and team principal Fred Vasseur regarding a move.

However, nothing materialised from these conversations and Hamilton opted to keep faith in the Mercedes team that he joined back in 2013, signing a new two-year contract extension that would keep him at Brackley until the end of the 2025 season.

The Hamilton and Ferrari saga looked to have ended with the signing of that deal, but a report from Italian news outlet Formu1a.uno stated that the two parties are once again in conversation regarding a sensational transfer.

Following on from that bombshell announcement, Spanish news organisation AS reported that Hamilton is actively pursuing the deal and that, while the details have not yet been ironed out, official confirmation may be around the corner.

While Hamilton’s new contract was announced as a two-year deal, the reports state that the structure was closer to a one-plus-one deal, leaving the 39-year-old free to renegotiate with other teams for the 2025 season and beyond.

This news would have an extreme impact on the driver market, leaving both Mercedes and Carlos Sainz in interesting positions. With Charles Leclerc committing to a new contract in January, it is the Spaniard who would depart Ferrari should Hamilton arrive.

Sainz has already been heavily linked to the Audi project with the German manufacturer set to join the sport as a works team in 2026, but with the Stake F1 Team braced for another year in the lower-midfield, that may not be an attractive move for 2025.

As per the AS report, the 29-year-old could look towards Williams for a new home, or even Mercedes, who would be in need of a replacement for the Ferrari-bound Hamilton.

The former Renault and McLaren driver has proven his worth as a team-mate to Leclerc during their time at Maranello and could complement George Russell nicely as a short-term replacement.
