Leicester star Hamza Choudhury banned and fined for drink-driving on wrong side of road

Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury has been fined £20,000 for drink-driving on the wrong side of the road in his wife’s Range Rover. The footballer was found to have consumed double the alcohol limit when he was taken to a police station in Nottingham in the early hours of January 19.

Choudhury pleaded guilty to driving while double the legal alcohol limit and careless driving at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning. Police dashcam footage of the 26-year-old being pulled over in Nottingham in the early hours of Friday January 19 was shown to the court.

The former England U21 international has a previous drink-driving conviction from 2017 and will subsequently face a mandatory minimum three-year driving ban, prosecutor Ben Payne told the court.

Choudhury was given a 40-month driving ban, and ordered to pay a £2,000 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs. He was told his 40-month ban would be reduced by around nine months if he completes a drink-driving rehabilitation course.

A charge of failing to cooperate with a roadside breathalyser test had been withdrawn.

District Judge Sunil Khanna told Choudhury: “I do accept that this will impact you and that you are extremely embarrassed by what has occurred.”
