New weather maps show the exact date the UK is predicted to be swamped with a 550-mile polar snow bomb.

WX Charts has forecast a thick column of snow and rain moving over the UK through the day on January 8.

It will move southeast from Northern Ireland, with snow hitting Belfast, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham and London.

The rain will move to the south of it over Cork, Cardiff, Plymouth and Southampton. Scotland may see patches of snow.

For January 8, the Met Office has predicted some showers and the possibility of snow, especially on higher ground in the north.

Temperatures are estimated to be between -1C and 0C in Scotland, 1C and 5C in Northern Ireland, 0C and 3C in Wales, 0C and 2C in the north of England and 0C to 3C in the south.

Met Office five-day forecast

Today, there will be rain in the southwest which will move northeast through the day. Rain will push from northern England into Scotland and Northern Ireland with some chance of hill snow.

Boxing Day will be mostly dry but cold with some sunny spells. There will be some wintry showers in the north that turn wet and windy across the southwest.

The rest of the week looks wet and windy with some snow in the northeast. It will be brighter but still showery and blustery on Thursday and Friday with chances of snow in the north.

Met Office long-range forecast

From December 29 to January 7, it will remain unsettled, with showers across the UK- and some snow possible to northern high ground. Strong winds are likely with the chance of gales on the coast.

Temperatures will be cold but closer to average with some bright and dry interludes into the start of January.
