Late Queen nailed Paddington sketch despite failing health after genius tip from director

Queen Elizabeth II starred in an award-winning sketch with Paddington Bear in the summer of 2022 to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

But her iconic appearance was nailed after the late monarch was advised to deliver her lines as if she was talking to her grandchildren, it has been revealed.

In the recording, Elizabeth drinks tea with the fictional bear from Peru at Buckingham Palace and reveals to him that she also likes marmalade sandwiches.

But it seems like the late monarch’s health was already frail during filming and the length of the shoot had started to affect her as she struggled to deliver the final line.

In the sketch, when Paddington reveals he keeps marmalade sandwiches under his hat, Elizabeth adds that she also likes them and keeps them in her black handbag.

Actor Simon Farnaby, who also appeared in the sketch as a butler, revealed: “There was a bit where Paddington says, ‘I keep my marmalade sandwiches in my hat, I keep it for emergencies.

“She goes, ‘So do I. I keep mine in here,’ and she has a handbag.”

But he explained the late Queen was too harsh at first: “The director would come in and say, ‘Ma’am, could you just be a bit gentler’. And she’d be so sweet and she’d go, ‘I’m so sorry, yes of course.’

“He’d go, ‘Like you’re talking to your grandchildren.’ She’d say, ‘Oh, of course. I’m so sorry.'”

The actor added that Elizabeth delivered the perfect line after that piece of advice, adding that she was “really sweet and really lovely”.

Farnaby also revealed that when he complimented the late monarch on being a great actress, she replied: “Well, I do it all the time.”

In the sketch, and after the camera had switched to the live feeds of the public outside Buckingham Palace, who were there for the Platinum Jubilee concert, the butler turned to the Queen and Paddington and said: “Happy Jubilee, ma’am, and thank you for everything.”
