'Labour have no idea': Lord Frost slams Starmer over plan to relax EU trade barriers

Lord Frost has criticised Labour’s newest plan to relax trade barriers with the EU within 18 months of becoming Prime Minister, as part of the Labour leader’s plan to “recalibrate” post-Brexit relations.

Just days after saying he wants to renegotiate Brexit, Sir Keir wants to make it easier to trade food, medicines and animals.

The move would make it easier for European farmers to flood the UK with their products.

The Telegraph reports Sir Keir also wants to make it easier for Brits to export to the EU, but former Brexit negotiator Lord Frost has said that will only happen if all of the UK follows EU rules without any say in setting them.

Boris Johnson’s former right-hand man added: “Plainly Labour have no idea what’s actually involved”.

Lord Frost slammed Labour, saying: “It’s extraordinary that 7 years after the Brexit referendum Labour still does not understand this basic point”.

“Or the fact that if you want something in a negotiation you have to give something. The EU is rigorous about this.”

The Tories leapt on Keir Starmer’s admission he wants to re-open Brexit should he become Prime Minister, accusing the Labour leader of wanting to “rig” British elections by allowing EU citizens to vote, in a scheme to “hand power back to Brussels”.

Sir Keir spent years trying to reverse Brexit as Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Brexit Secretary, but after becoming Labour leader claimed his party would not seek to reverse Brexit or take us back into the Single Market.

On Wednesday, senior Tories hammered Starmer over his confession that he plans to re-open Brexit.

Mark Francois, chairman of the European Research Group (ERG) of Tory Brexiteer MPs, said: “Having watched Keir Starmer, night after night in Parliament, try to frustrate us ever leaving the EU in the first place; I have always maintained that he ‘Remains a Remainer’ at heart – and now the truth is finally seeping out”.

“That man would try and take us back into the EU, even without a referendum, if he ever got the chance.”

According to The Telegraph, a Labour Government would hold regular summits with the EU.

The party reportedly wants a new UK-EU security pact, as well as to rejoin the Dublin Agreement on migrants.

The row will inevitably play a big role in the next election, as the Tories try to cling on to the Northern Red Wall seats that voted for Brexit and flipped Conservative in Boris Johnson’s stunning 2019 election victory.

In December 30 2020, the UK agreed a five-year review of the EU-UK free trade deal to iron out any creases.

Any changes to the deal would be negotiated by the end of 2025, giving a hypothetical Labour Government elected next autumn 18 months to tie us closer to the EU.

A senior Labour source said: “It is entirely sensible and right to say we would use the review to reduce barriers to trade”.
