Newcastle star Sean Longstaff revealed he asked Kylian Mbappe for his shirt before it was seen being worn by Kieran Trippier’s son. Longstaff was among the scorers on a remarkable night for the Magpies as they thrashed Mbappe’s Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
The midfielder bagged the third goal in the huge 4-1 triumph. His goal came after fellow Newcastle-born ace Dan Burn headed home the second on an emotional night at St James’ Park.
Longstaff was seen chatting with French star Mbappe just before the end of the game. The 25-year-old revealed that he wanted to ask for the winger’s shirt and hoped that he would get it despite the mammoth scoreline – and Mbappe storming straight down the tunnel after the chastening defeat.
“I think I was blocking him [Mbappe] from the goal-kick,” Longstaff told TNT Sport. “So I am going to try and get it [his shirt] for my little brother. Hopefully, I will still get it.”
However, images from TNT later proved that it was in fact Trippier’s son who bagged the biggest prize of the evening. The defender walked past the broadcaster’s pundits with the youngster, who seemed to be wearing Mbappe’s match-worn top.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand quizzed: “You’ve walked away with Mbappe’s… Is that Mbappe’s shirt?”
It was an incredible night for Newcastle who earned their first win in the Champions League for two decades. Miguel Almiron opened the scoring before Burn and Longstaff put Eddie Howe’s side 3-0 up.
Lucas Hernandez struck a consolation for the perennial Ligue 1 champions. But Fabian Schar added a fourth in injury time to compound the French side’s misery.
