King keen to 'welcome back Sussexes in heartbeat' as Harry and Meghan want to heal rift

King Charles is reportedly keen to welcome Prince Harry and Meghan Markle back into the Firm, a source has claimed. It comes in the aftermath of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Netflix documentary release, and a few days ahead of Harry’s memoir publishing. The couple, who stepped down from being senior members of the Royal Family in 2020, has fired fierce criticism on the institution.

But a source has suggested that the rift can be healed as the British monarchy would have the Sussexes back “in a heartbeat”.

Commenting on the biographical documentary featuring the lives of Harry and Meghan and their relationship with the Royal Family, the source said that Prince William, rather than King Charles, was the main target of criticism.

They noted: “In Netflix, the villain of the piece had clearly moved on to being [William], the Prince of Wales.

“Harry and Meghan actually had some nice words to say around the King’s role in helping them plan their wedding.”

They added: “Are they saving their ire for the book instead? Who knows. You can’t not feel sorry for Harry.

“He is fundamentally the product of a very damaged childhood.

“But you can also feel sorry for the individual and frustrated at the world he has created for himself, where he sees enemies at every turn.

“Despite it all, I know the institution would [still] have him back in a heartbeat.”

Harry alleged that his brother, the Prince of Wales, left him terrified after screaming and shouting during the Sandringham summit and that Kensington Palace “lied to protect my brother” when it issued a statement denying a story William had bullied him out of the royal family.

Harry and Meghan’s documentary also beat this year’s other big releases on Netflix, including the highest-rated episodes of the latest series of After Life (4.1 million), Stranger Things (3.9 million) and Bridgerton (3.4 million).

Despite episode one of Harry & Meghan attracting an audience of 4.5 million, this is less than half the typical ratings for two of the most-watched shows on traditional linear (non-subscription) channels, the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, and well below figures for recent World Cup matches.
