King Charles's unexpected — and quite un-royal — favourite teatime treat

According to his youngest son, King Charles has one unexpected favourite teatime food that he likes to treat himself to regularly.

Taking to his memoir Spare, Prince Harry recalled the first time that his father and step-mother met his now-wife Meghan Markle.

Going into detail about his wife’s first visit to see his father, Harry stated that a delicious “surgically laid out” spread to make Meghan feel welcome.

Writing in Spare, Harry said that his father was partial to crackers with “shredded basil” as a teatime treat.

Harry wrote: “We came to a round table laid with a white cloth. Beside it stood a trolley with tea: honey cake, flapjacks, sandwiches, warm crumpets, crackers with some creamy spread, shredded basil – Pa’s favourite.”

Harry went on to add: “Pa sat with his back to an open window, as far as possible from the popping fire.

“Camilla sat across from him, her back to the fire. Meg and I sat between them, across from one another.”

Speaking of the couple’s nerves prior to the meeting, Hary wrote: “I wolfed down a crumpet with Marmite; Meg had two smoked-salmon sandwiches.

“We were starving. We’d been so nervous all day that we hadn’t eaten.”

He also recalled that the King had offered his then-girlfriend some flapjacks and that she “loved them”.

As well as being an advocate for organic produce, the King set up a biscuit company more than 30 years ago.

The company, with the products being sold exclusively at Waitrose, has generated an enormous £30million – all of which has gone towards The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund.

Also known for her love of cheese, Princess Anne is another royal known to enjoy the common dairy produce.

According to The Lady Magazine, Princess Anne has a soft spot for “strong cheese”, with one article stating her ideal Christmas.

It read that she would love to be “sitting at her long kitchen table munching on a piece of strong cheese or curled up on the sofa in her conservatory reading a book.”
