King Charles was unamused when he saw a draft order of his coronation which failed to include Queen Camilla, reports suggest. Invitations for the event were revealed this week as Buckingham Palace released a copy featuring Camilla’s new title. Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II Camilla has been referred to as Queen Consort, but has now been named Queen Camilla on the invite. But it seems this wasn’t always the case.
The Daily Mail reports that the King was not happy when a draft order for the highly anticipated event did not include Camilla.
When the pair married in 2005 a statement said Camilla was planning to “use the title HRH the Princess Consort” when Charles acceded the throne.
However, marking her 70th year on the throne, Queen Elizabeth announced she wanted Camilla to be known as Queen Consort.
Consort refers to the spouse of the ruling monarch but does not provide ruling power. Previous consorts in modern history have also dropped the title, including the Queen Mother, Queen Mary, and Queen Alexandra.
In a statement marking the Platinum Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth said: “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me. And it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Now the Coronation invitation, which has been out to more 2,000 guests revealed that moving forward Camilla will be known as Queen following the ceremony on May 6 at Westminster Abbey.
The colourful and vibrant invitation reads: “The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III & Queen Camilla.”

A palace source said: “It made sense to refer to Her Majesty as the queen consort in the early months of His Majesty’s reign, to distinguish from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“‘Queen Camilla’ is the appropriate title to set against ‘King Charles’ on the invitation. The coronation is an appropriate time to start using ‘Queen Camilla’ in an official capacity. All former queen consorts have been known as ‘Queen’ plus their first name.”
Following the Coronation, the Royal Family website will be updated accordingly.
Marking the final weeks before the ceremony Buckingham Palace released a new image of the King and Queen.
The couple were photographed in the palace’s blue drawing room by Hugo Burnand wearing matching royal blue.
