Speaking of his new role, an insider said that he is due to leave the Army “within [the next] 18 months”.

They also added that fans should expect to see a lot more of him, all thanks to him “taking on in a super equerry role”.

The insider added: “The King’s pulling a decent trick by picking a social media sensation to be his right-hand man.”

Despite becoming a big hit over the past year, Lt Col Thompson emerged as the late Queen’s bodyguard in 2008.

This role gave him an online following, with his popularity esculating ever since.

Back in May, he was granted a very warm welcome on the King and Queen’s visit to Northern Ireland.

News of his new role has certainly delighted royal fans, with one taking to X – formally known as Twitter – to write: “…What a lovely start to my day [heart-eyes emoji] Ding Dong.”

Another wrote: “Starting my day with the news that Lt Col Johnny Thompson is going to accompany King Charles for many more years has put a smile on my face. My world is good again.”

Fans also took to X to praise the King for his decision to promote Major Thompson.

One fan wrote: “Good move by the King. He will be protected by Lt Col Johnny Thompson, and he will need it”.

Another wrote: “King Charles III made a very wise decision to keep Johnny Thompson working with him. He is well rounded with his skills and expertise.”
