King Charles has opened a new garden to the public at one of the Royal Family’s estates.
The Topiary garden at Sandringham House in Norfolk is now home to more than 5,000 yew trees after more than five months of preparation.
The King, who is known to have a passion for gardening, requested the new garden after he inherited the state from his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
The garden is reportedly inspired by childhood memories from an old topiary garden at the royal estate and follows the success of similar gardens at the King’s Gloucestershire estate, Highgrove.
An acre of land was dug up in preparation for the new project which features a maze of paths surrounded by flowers beds which are expected to be filled with herbaceous perennial plants and bulbs including Veronicastrum, Delphinium, Phlox, Echinacea and Lavender.
The central area of the garden will display yellow and pink rose varieties such as Gabrial Oak, Skylar and Charles Darwin.
While the gardens at Sandringham have been open since April, the new addition is not yet fully completed, the Telegraph reports.
Announcing the garden earlier this year Sandinrham Estate said it would “create joy for visitors and increase biodiversity in the gardens”.
The statement added: “The Topiary Garden will include the introduction of new plants and flowers, a maze of new paths and the regrading and straightening of sloping banks.
“The Garden will combine specialist horticultural practices and techniques to ensure the Topiary is maintained with plentiful seasonal colour from the flowers.
“In addition, it will create a rich source for pollinators and the provision of new habitats.”
Sandringham House is traditionally where the Royal Family spends Christmas every year.
The royals stay on the estate and attend the Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene Church just a short walk away.
They then enjoy a private lunch before sitting down to watch the King’s Christmas Day speech.
