King Charles is considering inviting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Balmoral Castle this summer as the monarch is intent on improving royal relations and building a closer bond with his grandchildren.
The 75-year-old monarch has seen the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet just a handful of times and is keen to spend more time with them.
A well-placed society source told Page Six: “I can see Charles desperately wanting to see the children, and extending this olive branch to Meghan and Harry. He may decide that life is just too short.
“Balmoral is truly the perfect, restful place for a reunion. If he does issue an invite, then Harry and Meghan should surely agree to the visit.”
Since leaving the Royal Family in 2020 Harry and Meghan have only returned to the UK as a couple for select occasions, with them bringing Archie and Lilibet over just once for the Platinum Jubilee.
Meghan too has been absent from the UK ever since Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral in September 2022, having decided not to attend the Coronation in May 2023.
While Harry is said to be keen to build bridges with his family, particularly following the news that King Charles and Princess Kate are battling cancer, his wife understandably has greater concerns.
The Sussexes remain based in Montecito, California and no longer have a UK home following their eviction from Frogmore Cottage last year.
Tensions have remained high between the Firm and the Sussexes ever since Harry and Meghan’s departure, however the Duke flew directly to London for a private meeting with his father in February once news of his diagnosis broke.
Despite only seeing each other for 30 minutes at Clarence House, the reunion sparked hopes that the families could spend more time together this year.
In an interview with Good Morning America shortly after his trip, Harry claimed he would be coming back to the UK more for work and hoped to see his father when he could.
Harry and Meghan are tipped to be back in London next month for the Invictus Games 10th anniversary service at St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8, with some speculation that they may bring Archie and Lilibet with them.
A source told New magazine that there had been a plan for the family to celebrate Archie’s fifth birthday on May 6, before travelling to the UK via private jet the following day and staying in a secret location where the children could meet up with their extended relatives.
However Meghan is said to have fears over her children’s safety, with the source explaining: “It’s now got to the point where Meghan doesn’t want to come to the UK with the children. She just doesn’t feel safe.
“The situation is now about whether the family should attend with increased security or Harry should go it alone.
