King Charles in high spirits on solo visit despite Camilla pulling out at last minute

King Charles made a solo trip to East London this morning after Queen Consort Camilla pulled out so she could continue to recuperate from COVID-19. The King visited the Felix Project, a food distribution charity in Poplar which helps provide food to some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

The charity was founded in 2016 by Justin and Jane Byam Shaw to help tackle food waste and food poverty through reclaiming surplus food from supermarkets and manufacturers to resdistribute to those in need.

They currently supply around 1,000 community groups and schools across London with food, alongside homeless shelters, food banks, pantries and domestic abuse refuges.

During his visit Charles met with volunteers and community partners, toured the site’s warehouse and kitchen and met with the charity’s supporters at a short reception.

The King and the Prince of Wales Charitable Fund have both contributed to a £1million starter fund providing the organisation with fridges and freezers, to enable them to keep their food fresher for longer.

So far over 600 fridges and freezers have already been distributed across the country, with 200 more currently being prepared.

This summer the charity will give out its 100 millionth meal since it began.

The Project also established Felix’s Kitchen in 2021, which uses surplus food to cook 3,500 – 5,000 meals every day.

A plaque was unveiled by Charles to commemorate the visit.

The Queen Consort tested positive for Covid on February 13 and had been due to join her husband at the kitchen.

However, she pulled out of the visit in order to ensure her wellbeing for a key commitment on February 23.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen had made an “excellent recovery” from the virus.
