King Charles ends long-standing royal tradition late Queen created out of grief


The King put an end to a decades-long tradition the late Queen Elizabeth II created shortly after the death of her father, George VI.

The late sovereign would traditionally head to her Norfolk residence of Sandringham House in mid-December and remain until the first week of February.

The end of her winter break would coincide with the anniversary of her father’s death, who died on February 6, 1952.

Elizabeth II was not in the UK at the time of his death had had to be rushed back from Kenya, where she and Prince Philip had stopped on their way to Australia.

For decades, the couple assembled their four children and their families, as well as other senior members of the Royal Family at Sandringham for the Christmas holidays.
