Killer nurse Lucy Letby’s 'best friend' insists pal is innocent despite guilty verdict

Lucy Letby’s best friend has spoken out, insisting that the former neonatal nurse is innocent.

Janet Cox, who worked with the 33-year-old baby killer on the neonatal unit at Countess of Chester Hospital, said she will continue to stand by Letby.

Earlier this week, Letby was sentenced a whole-life order after she was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six others.

Over 10 months, the court heard how Letby had injected the babies with air and poisoned several with insulin.

Lucy Letby’s legal team are reportedly considering an appeal to her sentence.

Speaking to the MailOnline, Mrs Cox said she still believes Letby was innocent.

For most of Letby’s trial, Mrs Cox reportedly sat beside the killer’s parents, John and Susan in the public gallery at Manchester Crown Court.

They were seated across the court from where police and relatives of Letby’s victims listened to the mountain of evidence against Letby.

On the occasions when Letby was in the court, she was sat between two female police officers and surrounded by lever arch files of evidence.

When Letby’s guilty verdict was read out Mrs Cox reportedly left the court crying. She claimed: “This cannot be right.”

A man told the Telegraph that Mrs Cox and Letby were “best friends”. Furthermore, Mrs Cox isn’t the only friend who has remained loyal to Letby following her trial.

A source told The Times: “There are still a small number of people on the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester who think she is innocent.

“They are finding it difficult to believe she could have done it because for so long they were fed the narrative that Letby was being blamed by consultants who were making excuses for their own mistakes.”

Another friend, Dawn Howe, 33, told the BBC she didn’t believe Letby was guilty.

She said: “Unless Lucy turned around and said ‘I’m guilty’, I will never believe that she’s guilty.

“We know she couldn’t have done anything that she’s accused of, so without a doubt, we stand by her.

“I grew up with Lucy and not a single thing that I’ve ever seen or witnessed of Lucy would let me for a moment believe she is capable of the things she’s accused of. It is the most out-of-character accusation that you could ever put against Lucy.”
