Kate, Princess of Wales, risks causing a stir if she appears at the Coronation of King Charles III wearing a tiara “dripping in jewels”, an expert has claimed.
Speculation has been rife in recent days surrounding what Kate will wear on the day, including the conundrum of sporting a tiara or floral crown.
Nicoletta Gullace, associate professor of history at the University of New Hampshire, believes Kate could cause “controversy” if she opts for more glitzy headwear.
She told Fox News ahead of the Coronation: “There has been a controversy over the tiaras: will Kate be permitted to wear a tiara or is she going to be made to wear something more casual or less expensive in part to show that they are not dripping in jewels in public during a difficult economic time but also so she won’t show up Camilla and Charles’s [outfits].”

The Telegraph reports that the decision over Kate’s tiara could be influenced by Charles’s concerns that the event should not be too flashy amid a cost of living crisis in the UK.
Carol Woolton, a Vogue contributing editor and founder of the podcast ‘If Jewels Could Talk, told the newspaper that Kate wore a tiara at her wedding despite similar rumours prior to the event.
She said: “I seem to remember we had all the same rumours before the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
“There were stories every day that Catherine was going to wear a floral headpiece and not a royal tiara and that Camilla as the Duchess of Cornwall was being called in to talk her around. I think she was going to wear the Halo tiara all along.
“I don’t believe that she won’t arrive at Westminster Abbey on Saturday without a tiara – this is the moment for these historic objects. It’s a conscious endorsement of the Coronation and visible connection to the long history of the Royal Family – and that they as a couple are in line for the throne. If you don’t wear a tiara to the Coronation when do you?”
