Jurgen Klopp pulls Sky reporter into Liverpool pen debate as Man City escape '100% foul'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp blasted the referee’s decision not to award his side a late penalty in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City. VAR looked at what he deemed a foul by Jeremy Doku on Alexis Mac Allister in the final few moments of the thriller, but opted against giving a spot-kick.

The hosts at Anfield had already been awarded one penalty in the second half, when Ederson tripped Darwin Nunez after beating the goalkeeper to Nathan Ake’s backpass. Alexis Mac Allister calmly slotted home from 12 yards to cancel out John Stones’ opener.

But with Liverpool piling on late pressure, they were incensed when Doku raised his foot high into the air to clear a corner. He made contact with the ball but also connected with Mac Allister and left the Argentine in a heap on the floor.

“It’s a penalty for all football people on the planet,” Klopp told Sky, before querying whether the interviewer thought that a foul should have been given.

“It was 100 per cent a penalty. They will find an explanation. It was 100% foul in all areas of the pitch and probably a yellow card. All the people with ipads around me were ‘wow, clear’. Maybe they can hide behind the phrase it is not clear and obvious.

“It is of course a penalty but we didn’t get it and that is fine. The most important thing for me is that we can play football like that. I saw so many sensational performances today.”
