Jordan Henderson sends message to England boo boys after Saudi backlash

Jordan Henderson says he “understands” why he was booed at Wembley on Friday night but insists he will not give up on his Euros dream. The former Liverpool midfielder, who swapped Merseyside for the riches of the Saudi Pro League in the summer, was jeered by England fans against Australia.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who swapped Merseyside for the riches of the Saudi Pro League in the summer, was jeered by England fans against Australia.

But Henderson insisted the boo boys have not made him any less committed to the England cause with the next major tournament just eight months away.

“It’s not nice, your own fans, if they were booing but listen, people have got their own opinions,” said Henderson. “I can understand the reasons in what they’re saying. I look at it from a different point of view obviously but I can understand it and I’ve got to take it on the chin.”

Henderson, who had previously been outspoken in his support on LGBT issues, has been branded a hypocrite for his move to Saudi in the summer.

He switched from Liverpool to Al Ettifaq for a transfer fee of just over £12million and a reported wages of £700,000 a week.

But the former Liverpool man insisted his commitment to international football remains total and he is hell bent on staying in the squad for the Euros in Germany next summer.

“I love playing for England, I have done for many years, that’s why I’m still here. I still want to play for England for as long as I possibly can and give everything for the team, for my country,” he said.

“Hopefully, I can keep performing, I can keep fit and then stay in the squad for the tournament next summer.”
