Speaking on ITV West Country, the Prime Minister categorically ruled out that he will hold a general election on the same day as the forthcoming local elections.

He told the broadcaster: “In several weeks’ time we’ve got elections for police and crime commissioners, for local councils, for mayors across the country, they’re important elections and that’s what I’m focussed on.”

Asked whether he would hold a general election on the same day, Mr Sunak said: “There won’t be a general election on that day.”

Now, with speculation mounting of a coup to oust the PM and replace him with a new leader, he is scrambling to secure support urging his party to “stick with me”.

The PM told warring Tories: “There is now a real sense that the economy is turning a corner, with all the economic indicators pointing in the right direction.”

Adding that inflation was on track to return to two 2% in the next few months, he said: “This year, 2024, will be the year Britain bounces back.”

Do you believe in his bold claim? Can the Tories pull off a stunning election victory in the face of defeat?
