John McEnroe has already broken golden rule at Australian Open as pundit faces backlash

Similarly at the US Open, McEnroe described world No. 61 Matteo Arnaldi as a “complete unknown” during his last 16 clash with Alcaraz despite entering the top 50 in that tournament.

But the 64-year-old appears unbothered by criticism on social media despite repeatedly breaking the golden rule of broadcasting which is to come prepared.

ESPN host Bryan Fenly claimed that he is up “until 2-3 AM doing prep work” every night before a game, while Eurosport commentator Anne-Marie Batson insisted that her preparation for each match takes around five hours – perhaps some advice that McEnroe may now follow to prevent further backlash.
