Joe Biden vows to hit Putin with sanctions as he embraces Alexei Navalny's widow Yulia

Police have already arrested hundreds of protestors in recent days.

He said: “Authorities fear Navalny’s funeral could turn into a political action.

“But people mourn him calmly and with dignity, even though they are being persecuted for it.”

Navalny was in prison serving a 19-year sentence on “extremism” charges. Many believed these charges were used to try and stifle his opposition to Putin.

In 2020, Navalny survived a Novichok attack while on a flight in Russia. He later blamed Putin for the attack.

When he returned to Russia, he was immediately arrested and sent to prison.
