Jeremy Vine blasted after confronting driver on his bike – 'why did you hoot me?'

Jeremy Vine confronted a driver who beeped at him while he was cycling, but everyone is saying the same thing.

The Radio 2 host posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing him cycling in Kensington High Street in London.

He points out the car as it comes up the road behind him with a caption: “This guy is cross I’m in his way.”

Vine can be seen further down the road, continuing the cycle, when he enters a bus lane and the car can get around him.

The white car beeps twice at Jeremy before quickly overtaking him and speeding away. The caption of the video here is: “I’m thinking…must be a medical emergency.”

The presenter reads the number plate aloud and then follows the car down four roads before stopping at its side while it’s stuck in traffic.

He says to the driver, who has the window open: “Why are you so angry?” To which the driver replies: “What do you mean why am I so angry?”

Vine says: “You just hooted me. Why did you hoot at me back there.”

And the driver says: “Because you were sitting in the middle of the road. You were sat in a provocative position. What gives you the right to sit in the middle of the road?”

Vine replies: “It wasn’t the middle of the road, it was the middle of my lane.”

According to the Highway Code, cyclists are told to ride in the centre of their lane, as less than that encourages drivers to pass too closely to them, risking crashes.

But those replying to the radio host’s post were not inclined to agree. Many noted that he was sitting in the middle of the lane, blocking the driver from speeding up.

One user said: “So you expect cars to drive behind you at a snail’s pace whilst you take up all the space?”

Another added: “This is why people hate cyclists. You’re going to be on the receiving end of some road rage one of these days, and you’ll get no sympathy from me.”

But some also sided with Vine, pointing out the Highway Code’s guidance and insisting that the man in the car was in the wrong.
