Japan has opened a “city within a city” skyscraper in Tokyo that rivals the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The Azabudai Hills complex has given Tokyo its new tallest skyscraper, with a new building forming the backbone of the community standing at 330metres above ground.
The ambitious new development will accommodate 20,000 office workers and up to 3,500 residents once it is fully occupied.
And it rivals the Eiffel Tower, just clipping the iconic French monument, which stands at 300m.
But it won’t be the area’s tallest building for long, with another on the horizon to stand more than a one-tenth 10 percent higher.
The complex, built by landscape developers Mori Building Co, which has teased the site as a “world-class new neighbourhood”.
The developers state they have “embraced” the modern urban village complex, with “green and wellness” themes mixed into the planning process.
They hope the combination of offices, residential rooms, retail opportunities and approximately 861,700 of total space will entice up to 30 million visitors per year.
Shingo Tsuji, Mori Building Co’s president and CEO, said his firm wants to embody the best that cities have to offer following “tremendous changes”.
He said: “Major cities around the world have gone through tremendous changes in recent years.
“We believe that what people want from urban living in the future is to have access to integrated functionalities while being able to live in harmony with nature, to build relationships with others and to enjoy physical and mental wellbeing.
“We wanted to create a neighbourhood that embodies these values in the heart of Tokyo.”
The landmark Mori Building, which could attract people looking to experience Tokyo’s largest skyscraper, will only be the world’s biggest city’s tallest for a few years.
Azabudai Hills is taller than the country’s tallest, the 296 metre-tall Yokohama Landmark Tower in Kanagawa prefecture, but only until 2027 or 2028.
Tokyo developers expect to finish the supertall skyscraper Torch Tower by then, which will have a predicted height of up to 390 metres.
