Jannik Sinner shares emotional message to parents after Australian Open triumph

Jannik Sinner sent a heartfelt message to his parents after lifting his maiden Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old came back from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in what was his first Major final. And he shared his hope for other kids to have the freedom that his parents gave him.

Sinner lifted his biggest title on Sunday, pulling off a five-set comeback for just the second time in his career to be crowned the Australian Open champion. It capped off an incredible run for the 22-year-old, who didn’t drop a set in his first five matches and defeated 10-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.

Stepping up to make his first Grand Slam victory speech, the fourth seed made a touching comment about his parents. Addressing “everyone who is watching from home, especially my family”, Sinner said: “I wish that everyone could have my parents because they always let me choose whatever I wanted to.”

Referencing his days as a national junior skiing champion, the Italian continued: “Even when I was younger, I played also some other sports and then they never put pressure on myself. And I wish that this freedom was possible for as many young kids as possible so thank you so much for my parents.”
