James Cleverly replaces Suella Braverman as Home Secretary in major Cabinet reshuffle

Rishi Sunak has signalled that he will refuse calls to leave the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) by appointing James Cleverly as his new Home Secretary.

The former Foreign Secretary recently told Express.co.uk on a trip to Japan that he was opposed to leave the ECHR with a number of Tory MPs on the right demanding the move.

By switching darling of the right Suella Braverman with the pragamatic Mr Cleverly, Mr Sunak appears to be sending a signal ahead of Wednesday’s Supreme Court decision on the Rwanda deportations.

If judges rule against the scheme and agree with the Appeal Court that it breaks the terms of the ECHR then with Mr Cleverly in post it is likely the Prime Minister will resist calls to pull out of the convention.

One Tory backbencher from the right of the party told Express.co.uk that the move was “bad news”.

Ms Braverman was sacked after being accused of using inflammatory language ahead of the Armistice day protests last weekend.

She said: “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as Home Secretary. I will have more to say in due course.”
