James Cleverly announces trip to Falklands with warning of Labour threat to independence

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has announced a forthcoming visit to the Falkland Islands, to rapturous support from Tory members.

Speaking to a fringe event this evening, Mr Cleverly implied Labour are a threat to Britain’s overseas interests.

He joked some members may have noticed he may have had a “run-in with the Argentinian Government at the moment”.

“Some of you may have noticed that because they have an election coming they’re trying to do a bit of flexing of their muscles when it comes to the people of the Falklands.

“Now I believe in the right of people having self-determination.

“And we need to return a Conservative Government to make clear that they and others around the world are protected.

“And just to hammer home that point I’m going to visit the Falklands, because I believe it is my job to make it absolutely clear that a Conservative Government that can be trusted to look after the best interests of this country and those others around the world who rely on British good governance”.
