Jail on lockdown whenever Gilgo Beach killings suspect Rex Heuermann leaves his cell

The jail holding the man suspected of being the Gilgo Beach serial killer is placed on lockdown whenever he leaves his cell, it has emerged.

Rex Heuermann is also said to have had only one visitor since he was sent to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility – and that was his solicitor. Neither his estranged wife – nor their adult children – have visited him since he was incarcerated, say reports.

The New York City architect was arrested on July 13 and was later charged with the murder of three of the 11 victims in a long-unsolved string of killings. Authorities say the father of two is also the “prime suspect” in another killing.

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office told the New York Post that Heuermann, 59, remains on suicide watch and is kept in a jail cell alone. However, Victoria DiStefano told The Post that Heuermann can watch television and request newspapers.

He can receive mail and has access to a law library. And he can also exercise in an outdoor prison yard,

However, Heuermann is subject to a strict security protocol. This includes him only being allowed to leave his cell when all other movement within the facility is suspended.

“We will continue to cease all movement when he is outside of his housing unit to ensure the protection of our officers, Heuermann and all of the individuals incarcerated in the Suffolk County Correctional Facility,” DiStefano said.
