Jackie Kennedy’s bloodstained Chanel outfit was found in an attic 20 years after her husband President John F. Kennedy was shot dead in Dallas, according to an explosive new book.
The First Lady was sitting in an all-pink outfit beside JFK when he was shot twice while sitting in the back of his open-top car as it drove through the Texas city.
Jackie was covered in her husband’s blood as she desperately tried to claw away from his body and onto the back of the car.
Now a new book on Jackie Kennedy by author J. Randy Taraborrelli reports that her outfit was found inside a cardboard box in the attic of her mother Janet Auchincloss’s house roughly 20 years after the tragic attack.
The pink ensemble was still covered in the blood of JFK when it was discovered, according to the author.
A White House maid handed the bloodied outfit to Janet after Jackie returned to the Oval Office on the day of JFK’s assassination. She originally refused to take the suit off – so the public could see what had been done to her husband.
Jackie reportedly thought her bloodied clothes had been destroyed, but was surprised and mortified when her mother Janet rediscovered the items in the 1980s.
Her suit has been donated to the US National Archives and will not be released until 2103 – meaning many of us will not have a chance to see it in our lifetimes.
Taraborrelli writes in his new book “Jackie: Public, Private, Secret”, set to be published later this week, that the former First Lady’s pink pillbox hat worn on the day of JFK’s assassination vanished.
“[Jackie’s secretary] retrieved the hat at Parkland Memorial Hospital,” he writes in an extract published by the Daily Mail. “She gave it to Janet a week after JFK’s funeral. Janet decided to keep it for herself. It is not known what happened to it.”
In the months after JFK’s assassination, Jackie moved out of the White House as her late husband’s successor Lyndon B. Johnson moved in with his family.
She bought a beautiful mansion in Georgetown, Washington DC known as Baker House. The colossal home is made up of three connecting properties joined by five passageways.
The ex-First Lady would only stay in the property for a little more than a year as it completely lacked privacy and she was routinely hounded by paparazzi trying to snap pictures of her leaving the home.
Yet, the luxurious property still commands a huge price owing to its brief connection with Jackie K. Earlier this year, it was put on the market for a staggering $26.5 million.
