'It's not the dogs, it's the owner!' Expert rages at young males making pets aggressive

A dog behaviour specialist has slammed dog owners after a 37-year-old man died in the latest attack this year. Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Colin Tennant said “it’s always the same type of person I’m dealing with” when interviewing those responsible for aggressive dogs. It comes following the attack on Jonathan Hogg in Leigh, Greater Manchester, at around 9.10pm on Thursday.

He died in hospital after being left with serious injuries from the attack which saw him mauled.

Discussing the wider issue of dangerous dogs, Colin said: “In the Dangerous Dogs Act when the police are discerning if the dog is of type before we seize it, I conclude that the people we are dealing with are of type.

“Of the hundreds of interviews I have conducted, with few exceptions, it’s always the same type of person I’m dealing with.

“I’ve never dealt with a female owner of this type of dog it’s always been young males and they have a mental attitude towards these Bull breeds and it’s to do with culture, image and the dogs unfortunately are an accessory for them to propel their masculinity onto other people by having a larger dog that in their view is aggressive and they go out of their way to make their dog aggressive.

“This group of people don’t want the dog to be sociable.

“That can’t be repaired so well later on but in their image they want a dog as an accessory.

“Dogs are just another accessory but then when these dogs are sold or they can’t manage them they sell them to other people who don’t know the history and it leads to attacks.”
