Inside Osborne House – the 'intimate' royal property used as a countryside 'sanctuary'

Despite its close proximity to the famed Cowes Week events, which are attended by the likes of Princess Anne, Osborne House is never used as a place for the Royal Family to stay.

In fact, the property has not served as an official royal residence since the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, when it was “given to the nation” on the Coronation Day of King Edward VII in 1902.

Since 1904 the traditional stone house has remained open to the public, though it still remains a significant part of the Crown Estate, according to royal historian and commentator Mok O’Keeffe (@gayaristo).

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “Osborne House is managed by English Heritage, even though it remains Crown property. It is not used for royal engagements and has not been referenced in the Court Circular.

“Therefore, members of the royal household do not stay at Osborne House, unlike Windsor Castle or Holyrood House.”
