Iceland volcano erupts again with people ordered to evacuate weeks after returning home

Iceland has been hit with another volcanic eruption just weeks after residents of a nearby town were allowed to return home following eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Footage of this latest eruption has captured magma, smoke, and ash shooting high into the sky over the town of Grindavik, located 43 miles from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik.

The eruption occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on Sunday, following a series of earthquakes near the town of Grindavik, which forced the community to evacuate overnight, according to Iceland’s RUV television.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office’s Kristn Jónsdóttir told RUV television that lava was flowing a few hundred metres north of town, about 400 to 500 metres.

Residents of Grindavik had previously been evacuated due to earthquake activity in November, and they were allowed to return on December 22.

Despite defensive walls built around the volcano to divert magma away from the community, the barriers north of Grindavik have been breached, and lava is now advancing towards the town.
