'I was attacked by a snake and hawk at the same time – here's how I survived'

A woman was catapulted into an unprecedented situation when she suddenly found herself fighting off a snake and a hawk attack at the same time.

Peggy Jones, 64, was moving an open field at the back of her Silsbee, Texas home on the evening of July 25 when a snake dropped from the sky and immediately started coiling up around her arm.

Within seconds, a hawk swooped in and started violently pecking the woman on the head and face as it tried to get a hold of the snake.

Ms Jones said: “As you’re trying to sling it off, he’s striking me in my face. He hit my glasses a couple of times.

“I could feel the pressure of the hit. He’s not coming off. It’s like he’s glued onto my arm.”

As the double attack went on, the snake – estimated to have been at least 4 feet long (122cm) – kept spewing what Jones assumed to have been venom.

The hawk then moved on to attack her arm as it joined in efforts to remove the reptile, slashing the woman in his effort.

Ms Jones said the attack “felt like an eternity” and she continue to pray to Jesus to help her get out of the dangerous situation.

She told Fox News Digital: “I was just saying, ‘Jesus, please help me. Help me, Jesus.”

After a few seconds, the hawk finally managed to rip the snake off her arm and flew away with the reptile.

A shell-shocked Ms Jones reached the front of the property to show her husband Wendell her injuries and he immediately packed her into their car and drove her to hospital.

She detailed the incident while in the vehicle and admitted to struggling to see from one eye after the hawk repeatedly pecked at her glasses.

Once at the hospital, her injuries were treated and she was injected with antibiotics. Fearing the snake bit her, the doctors reassured her the bite marks she had on her arm were likely from the talons of the hawk.

Despite the clean bill of health, Ms Jones admitted to spending the night awake to monitor whether her arm had swelled up or turned back.

She said she had previously experienced a snake bite and it had taken her some time to recover from the experience, so she remained concerned about going through the same ordeal for a second time.

Ms Jones added: “That was one of the reasons that I knew what to look for. These wounds were not the same type of pain as when the snake had bitten me.

“I have nightmares and I really don’t sleep much. It’s just been like a rollercoaster. I’m just thankful that I’m alive, and I’m here to tell my story.”

Since the accident, Ms Jones has not mowed her lawn and is still trying to come with the psychological toll of the double attack.
