'I shattered my eye socket and I am now suing easyJet – I've been to hell and back'

A grandmother has recalled a horrific incident where she slipped on wet tiles while on a luxury holiday and was left with blood “streaming down her face.”

Pauline Taylor, 61, had been on an easyJet all-inclusive holiday with her husband Mark in Funchal, Madeira, when she took an aqua aerobics class in the hotel’s indoor spa pool. But afterwards, she fell on the tiles and suffered extensive injuries.

These included a broken eye socket, cheekbone and wrist. She was rushed to hospital where her arm was put into a temporary cast, but received more care back at home in Manchester afterwards.

She is now vowing to take easyJet to court, the Mirror Online reports. The gran of one, from Bury, Greater Manchester, said: “The consultant said he had never seen such a profound injury from a fall. The whole of my eye socket was just a mess of bone and debris and my cheekbone was utterly smashed.

“I had to wear a splint on the outside of my face to keep it in place.  The tiles were black and shiny – it was just awash with water. I threw my flip flops down to put my feet in and the next thing I know I’m on the floor and there’s blood streaming from my face and I’m in agony from my arm.

“I’d fallen on my left side, I must’ve put my hand out to catch my fall. I really don’t remember it, it was so sudden. I knew there was something wrong with my eye because my vision was all jagged. I couldn’t get up off the floor so I knew straight away that something was drastically wrong.

“I was a bit dazed but I hadn’t blacked out or anything. They went to go get my husband and when he came to see me, he almost ended up slipping as well.”

Pauline had a metal plate inserted in her arm to help heal the break as well as reconstructive surgery on her face. She said the accident has left her with long-lasting damage and hopes to receive compensation from easyJet for what happened.

An easyJet holidays spokesperson told MirrorOnline: “We were really sorry to hear about Ms Taylor’s experience on holiday. There is nothing more important to us than the safety and wellbeing of our customers. As this is now a legal matter, we’re unable to comment further.”
