‘I live on one of the UK’s ‘cheapest streets’ where houses sell for just £25k’

Meadow Street in Accrington, Lancashire is one of the cheapest streets in the UK, with houses having sold for around £25,000.

With residents situated close to an Aldi for groceries, a Home Bargains Store, a McDonald’s, and a trampoline park, the quiet street has access to amenities.

Meadow Street has narrow footpaths and contains single rows of terrace housing made of character, and charm, with newer builds having an identical construction. On the street, there are remnants of an old pub, the Royal Oak, where the pub sign is still displayed on the building structure.

One resident, Muhammad Choudary, has lived on Meadow Street for over three years after his family purchased the property. He believed buying in the area pre-pandemic was a steal, but he thinks houses will go for more than double or triple the price post- pandemic.

He said: “After coronavirus, no it’s gone up, it’s gone triple the price. One house that maybe sold for £25,000 before the pandemic. After, the owner sold for £68,000.”

The 45-year-old taxi driver has a keen interest in the housing market. He added: “Because I have interest in property I look at the prices and I noticed that before the pandemic there are different prices. In Lancashire, there’s so many cheaper properties in Accrington, Burnley, Blackburn, very cheap but now, it’s equal.”

Speaking to Lancashire Live, he explained how he finds the area to be very “family friendly”.

He said: “We don’t have any problems here anymore, there was some disturbances when I came but that’s all stopped now. Most people living here are families you have a few families at the bottom.”
