'I got heavily tattoed in my 20s, now I'm 36 and they no longer reflect me'

A woman shared her regret at getting heavily tattooed in her 20s and warned others against doing so before turning “into a fully developed adult human”. TikTok user saraovershares posted a video in which she delved into one of the reasons why she wishes she hadn’t got extensive body art when she was a young adult.

Sara, 36, who has tattoos on her fingers, arms, upper body and neck, said in a video: “There’s a lot of reasons to regret my tattoos but today specifically I wanted to talk about not matching my aesthetic.

“I think if you asked almost anybody that’s over 30 if they have a better idea of who they are in their 30s than they did in their 20s, they are gonna be like, ‘Oh my god, yes’.

“I have all of these tattoos that don’t necessarily reflect who I am at 36.

“They may have reflected a moment in time in my 20s, maybe a moment in time that I was like not doing so well mentally, and they are here forever.”

The 36-year-old from Virginia, US, likened getting extensively inked as a young adult to putting “a shirt on once when you were in your 20s, and now you have to wear that for the rest of your life”.

She acknowledged there are ways for tattoos to be removed, but that’s not something “even feasible” for her.

Explaining further how her aesthetic has changed over the past decade, Sara said: “Generally I have a lot more femme, girly aesthetic than I did when I was younger.”

Growing older, she found out she likes once again a lot of things she used to enjoy as a child, including spending time outside and wearing white and ruffles.

On the other hand, in her 20s she went through a more of a “dark and spooky and moody” phase when it came to her appearance, the Tiktoker explained.

She concluded the video by saying people admire her tattoos and the artist did a good job, but she still wishes they “weren’t on my body”.

She added: “But I wanted to come on here and put myself out there and say that I was told that I would regret my tattoos when I got older. I am older and I do regret my tattoos and you might too.”

The video was shared in early March and has since garnered more than 163,000 likes and has been shared some 10,800 times.

Among the thousands of comments this video received, some were critical of Sara’s take, with one Tiktok user, Tasha Rae, saying: “Well, who you used to be is a part of who you became now so there’s that. No regrets for the journey.”

Another, Lisa Marie, said: “I have enough, got my first at 19. If you regret them, you didn’t get them for the right reason to start. The joys of being young.”

Others, however, described the Tiktoker as brave for admitting her regrets and found themselves in her words.

Jill Bullard said: “I get it. We evolve and we don’t have the wisdom when we are young and perhaps ‘confused’. You are brave for sharing.”

And ChelseaRizo simply said: “Wow, I totally feel this.”
